ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਜਿਉਂਦੀ ਜਾਗਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਮੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਮੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸਾਹ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਨਿਖਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ-ਡੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਲਿਆਂ-ਮੁਸਾਹਬਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਕੀਨ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਜਰਗ, ਛਪਾਰ, ਅਤੇ ਜਗਰਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਵਰਗੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਖਿੱਚ ਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਅਜੋਕੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਮੇਲੇ ਵੀ ਥਾਂ-ਥਾਂ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਮੇਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਘੁੱਗ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅੱਜ-ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਆਵਾਜਾਈ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਥਾਹ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੰਡ-ਪਿੰਡ, ਗਲੀ-ਗਲੀ, ਹੱਟੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕਾਰਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ੍ਰੀਦੋ-ਫ਼ਰੋਖਤ ਦੇ ਢੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਆਈ ਹੈ। ਮੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਬਲਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਰੀ ਮੰਡੀ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਗ਼ਾਇਬ ਹੈ। ਰੰਗ-ਬਰੰਗੇ ਪਰਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਿਬਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰੇ ਊਠਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੰਡੀ ਵੀ ਹੁਣ ਰਵਾਇਤ ਮਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਮੇਲੇ ਦੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਏਨੀ ਭੀੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੋਟਰ-ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੜਕ ਤੋਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਨਾ ਮੁਹਾਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੁਨਿਆਰੀ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਨਿਕ-ਸੁਕ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੁਕਾਨਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੁਟਿਆਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੀੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਜੇਕਰ ਡੇਢ ਕੁ ਦਹਾਕਾ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੀ ਸ੍ਵੈ-ਸੇਵੀ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀ ‘ਮੇਲ਼ਾ ਭਲਾਈ ਕਮੇਟੀ’ ਮੇਲ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਖੇਡ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਮੇਲ਼ਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਨਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਛਪਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਨੇ ਮਹਿਜ਼ ਜੂਏ ਤੇ ਲੱਚਰਤਾ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਣਾ ਸੀ। ਜਿੱਥੇ ਇਹ ਮੇਲਾ ਆਪਸੀ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਿੱਘ ਵਧਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉੱਥੇ ਇਹ ਮੇਲਾ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਜਿਊਂਦੀ-ਜਾਗਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਹੈ। ਗੱਭਰੂ, ਮੁਟਿਆਰਾਂ, ਬੱਚੇ ਤੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਮੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੁੰਮ-ਹੁਮਾ ਕੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੇ ਹਨ।
