Tea is the most commonly consumed beverage in the world. This is good news because tea offers important health benefits. Its benefits were first discovered by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung who declared that it gives vigor to body, contentment of mind and determination of purpose. Today there is ample proof that tea in its many forms possesses a number of health benefits from supporting the immune system to reduce the risk of cancer, to help and preventing tooth decay. What makes tea such a healthy drink? The star compounds are called catechins. Those are antioxidants that help prevent cell damage by harmful molecules called free radicals. Tea can be black, green and red and is derived from a warm-weather evergreen tree known as Camelia Sinensis. The more processing, tea leaves undergo, the darker they become. Green tea is the least processed tea. It is simply steamed quickly and offers the maximum healing powers because it isn’t fermented. It also helps prevent tooth decay and aids weight loss.

Long ago, men spent most of their time looking for food. They ate anything they could find. Some lived mostly on plants. When food was search, they ate the bark of trees. If they were lucky, they would find a bird’s nest with eggs. People who lived near the water ate fish or anything that washed ashore, even rotten whales. Some people also ate insects and small animals like lizards that were easy to kill. Later, men learned to make weapons. With weapons. they could kill larger animals for meat. At first, men wandered from place to place to find their food. But when they began to grow plants, they stayed in one place and ate what they could grow. They tamed animals, trained them to work, and killed them for meat. Day after day. people ate the same foods. Gradually, men began to travel greater distances. The explorers who sailed unknown seas found new lands. Here they found new foods and spices and took them back home. The Portuguese who sailed around the stormy Cape of Good Hope to reach China took back Chinese apples’, the fruit we call oranges today. Later, Portuguese colonists carried orange seeds to Brazil. From Brazil, oranges were brought to California, the first place to grow oranges in the United States. Peach, persimmon and melon also came from China. So did a new drink, tea.

One night a man came to our house and told me ” There is a family with eight children. They have not eaten for days.” I took some food and went out. When I finally came to the family, I saw the faces of those little children disfigured by hunger. There was no sorrow or sadness in their faces, just the deep pain of hunger. I gave the rice to the mother. She divided it in two and went out, carrying half the rice with her. When she came back, I asked her. “Where did you go?” She gave me this simple answer, “ To my neighbour -they are also hungry.” I was not surprised because poor people are generous but I was surprised that she knew they were hungry.
